Typewriter Rodeo: Scooters

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

Dockless scooters: like ’em or hate ’em, they’re everywhere these days, and are likely here to stay because tech companies refuse to stop “disrupting” the way we get around. While they can be fun for a quick whirl around town, they also go faster than some expect when they first hop on, which has led to many an accident. They’ve become such a problem that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention even announced the launch of a special study in Austin to evaluate the health risks of these two-wheeled menaces.

“Scooters”

they seem like a good idea

until one

kisses your car

at 20 mph

They seem super fun

until one

leaves you behind

going downhill

they seem like a good idea

until your head

and the curb

meet cute

they seem like a good idea …

oh, heck,

they NEVER seem like a good idea

unless maybe

you see one

gracefully sailing through the air

flung from the top of

Mt. Bonnell

a sacrifice

to the scooting overlords

or maybe

a message ….
