Typewriter Rodeo: Something about the fishes of Texas

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

By Sarah BeachOctober 7, 2022 10:45 am,

The Typewriter Rodeo operates by request. And this request by a Texas Standard listener named Amanda left our poet a lot of room for interpretation. Want to request a poem? Just email .

Something about the fishes of Texas
(for Amanda)

Think of your favorite swimming hole
Maybe Pedernales
Lady Bird Lake
even Barton Springs

Beneath & among our flailing limbs
are the fishes of Texas
enjoying the freshwater, too

There’s the cute little sun fish,
the elusive Guadalupe bass,
and don’t be scared
but right behind you
there might be an
alligator gar

So next time it rains
or for a long time doesn’t
& you think about
the ebb & flow
of your favorite
dipping spots

Think about the gilled guys too
they need clean, plentiful streams
arguably more so
then me & you
