Typewriter Rodeo: Soup Season

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

Jackets may not be necessary many days in a Texas December — but a warm bowl of soup can feel welcome even when the temperatures don’t require it. That was the inspiration behind this listener request!

Soup Season

Dig out those veggie scraps
The dreary dregs of the last garden haul
And stick them in the simmering stockpot

Search for any rosemary bushes
that survived the February winter blast
And bundle up a big fistful
to toss in the broth

Then, patience
Take the dogs for a walk
While the flavors infuse
While the seasonings blend
While all the bits and bites combine
Into that magical warming elixir

That can mean only one thing

Even though it’s 82 degrees in Texas

We’re call it —

It’s Soup Season!
