Typewriter Rodeo: Sports in the time of COVID

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

The Winter Olympics are going on — so is the Super Bowl. Some aspects of both of those huge sporting events look very different these days, others look exactly the same. That was the inspiration for this Typewriter Rodeo poem.

Sports in the time of COVID

If we think of virus particles
like tiny little volleyballs,
like baseball spittle,
like itty bitty basketballs
being lobbed to
and fro
being caught
and dropped
and passed
and spiked
then it’s no wonder sports have survived
the Great Non-stop Pandemic of Forever
and it makes one wonder if
the blades and sluices,
the luges
and skeletons
will also survive
the onslaught
of particles that seem to win
no matter what,
that get the gold
silver
and bronze
in the end of each wave…
who is playing whom here?
who comes out on top?
what even are the games
we play
when our opponent
is always a variation
of the same
