Typewriter Rodeo: Summer Electric Bills

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

The kids may be back in school, but both the calendar – and the temperatures – still make it seem like summer. That was the inspiration for this Typewriter Rodeo poem.

Summer Electric Bills

a fun game to play

in this

the deepest well

of stifling heat

is

what else could we buy

for the money it costs

to not melt

in Texas summer?

July AC bill?

or

cruise to Mexico

August AC bill

or

a semester at Harvard

combine all summer electric costs

and whoa

whoa

you just bought

yourself

a trip for you

and all your friends

to the space station

or

you can just keep paying

those bills

cooling your house

and dreaming of the days

when you can pay

only half a million bucks

to not sweat

all night

someone please help us

make this heat stop
