Typewriter Rodeo: Summer Trips

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

Fewer pandemic restrictions on travel mean more Texans are hitting the roads or the skies this summer. Whether it’s a trip to see family or to get away from them — this Typewriter Rodeo poem suggests it’s a different way to rediscover ourselves and one another.

Summer Trips

This past year the world
Seemed to unravel
But now, at last, yes —
It’s time to travel

Perhaps you’ll start small
With a next-city drive
Just being out on the road
Feels so alive

Or maybe you’ll trek
To a National Park
You’d forgotten how much
You needed that spark

Visit family and friends
In faraway towns
Or pick someplace new
And just wander around

Jump on a plane
Even go overseas
London is open
So is Belize

We’ve felt so secluded
This past year of forever
So go travel — it’s what helps
Keep us together.
