Typewriter Rodeo: Texas Roadkill

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

Uh oh! What was that? Oh no. I hope it wasn’t … uhhh. That was definitely a stray branch, or a piece of truck tire, right?

Texas Roadkill

the dreaded WHUMP

is not like the snipe.

you don’t hunt the WHUMP

you don’t seek it out.

the WHUMP finds you

in the day time

and at night

driving fast

driving slow,

the WHUMP

is there

hiding at every curve

and when it strikes

the WHUMP always wins

even as it loses

a dedicated warrior

in the fight against

pristine cars

the WHUMP

is found everywhere

but in Texas

it’s especially special,

as it leaps, flies, rolls,

drives

in your path,

pre-roadkill

targeting you

a WHUMP

in armadillo clothing
