Texans have been suffering this week in the prolonged bitter cold, without power and without water. This Typewriter Rodeo poem is recognition of that suffering combined with the hope we continue to help each other through it.
Texas Winter
After 38 hours without power
It was 33 degrees
inside our house
Under our ten layers of blankets
We held a family meeting
Packed our backpacks
And braved the elements
We trekked two miles
Across powdery snow
Slippery ice
And ankle-soaking slush
To the grandparents
Who thankfully still had power
They greeted us with bowls of soup
As we peeled off our many layers
And breathed a deep, if brief, sigh of relief
My neighbors, my Texas, may you share in our
Food
Water
Warmth
Safety
And health
So that all of us together
Can rise above yet another unfathomable crisis
