Typewriter Rodeo: The Afterlife of Antiques

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

Antique stores dot the Texas landscape – often taking over old gas stations or restaurants – and filled past the brim with the belongings of yesteryear. That was the inspiration for this Typewriter Rodeo poem.

The Afterlife of Antiques

tucked away

in the hidden corners of this enormous

and mostly empty state

they wait

treasures

forgotten by time

abandoned by families

far away

from home

in barns and attics

warehouses

shops in little towns

or blanketing a million acres

out around Round Top, Texas

i imagine them conversing

on their long wait

for their new forever home

or for rot to finally take them

make them indistinguishable

from dust

telling tales of all they saw

in their bedrooms and kitchens

sitting rooms and porches

they saw it all

they were watching

listening too

and it’s no different with

the furniture of today

only now
