Typewriter Rodeo: The Cone

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

We think they’re good for our pups, protecting them from their own urges to lick or scratch. But plastic cones are far less fun – and let’s face it, confusing – for those pooches who have to don them after a visit to the vet.

The Cone

I am not entirely sure

what I did to warrant this cone

that is preventing me from scratching

my itchy stitches

But it is most surely

The most inopportune place

A human has stuck a cone

I am trying fiercely to look

cool

But I keep bonking my nose into walls

And getting snagged on corners

And although I am trying as hard as I can

To connect my tongue

With the world outside this cone

I am starting to wonder if my new

forever

Is just front-me in cone patiently missing

back-me which was a good part of me

to scratch
