Typewriter Rodeo: The Flood

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

Drought has crept back over much of Texas. Now, a burst of rain provides much-needed moisture to a parched land. The challenging, perhaps heartbreaking ebb and flow of this weather pattern was the inspiration of this Typewriter Rodeo poem.

The Flood

wash over me, i plead
standing in the safety of my 4 corners
this quiet morning

watching the down pouring
is this all love is? oscillating between
the drought and the flooding?
being without then feeling overwhelmed within

i just want a steady stream, some levity
hands to hold, secrets to keep

ive waited and waded
through evaporating seas     and dry seasons
searching for wells to sustain me through the
drought… and as we finally make it out

wash over me, i plead
