Typewriter Rodeo: The Horror

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

Halloween costumes often reflect the news cycle. When that happens, the results can be disturbing. That was the inspiration for this Typewriter Rodeo poem.

The Horror

last night the ghoulies came to my door

the ghosts and the goblins as well

six harry potters, two snapes and a ron

casting their trick or treat spell

some of the costumes got bloody

but only a few truly scared

the tween who was dressed

as a late mortgage payment

was not one from i’d prepared

then there was the gang of kids

all dressed as their own climate changes

the flood carried water, the drought

had her dust

and the displaced had her dolls in cages

it seems that for some kids

(like brave little Greta)

the world

has enough real stuff to make terror

and if that fills us older folks

with regret

i think we must admit that’s our error…

trick or treat!
