Typewriter Rodeo: Too old for rollercoasters

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

Too old for rollercoasters

I am too old

for rollercoasters now

found out at the rodeo

on the “warm up” one,

I did lose my stomach

when I was young,

but it never went too far

never felt electric-blender whipped

head tipped over the edge

ready to ruin it for everyone

a kid yelled, “no hands”

I wasn’t sure my hands

were still on my body

had to be helped out

when we jerked to a stop,

stood, wobbly, and watched

it crank up again

knowing this was the end of rollercoasters

for me, this kind at least

Maybe it was time

to quit my not-right job,

tell that person

that thing

I can’t come back from

Maybe I’m just old enough

to make myself dizzy

right here on the ground.
