Typewriter Rodeo: Twitter

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

Social media can be an escape — a place to share wins and cat photos. It can also be a place where bullying runs rampant, misinformation is spread, and anxieties are stoked. That was the inspiration for this Typewriter Rodeo poem.

Twitter

All I wanted
Was to be inspired
But it was like the internet
Had been set afire

Insults hurled
Left and right
Doesn’t take many characters
To be full of spite

Thread after thread
Leading forever down
Seems like “us vs. them”
Makes the Twitter go ’round

I saw a few glimmers
But not a whole lot
And couldn’t tell if real
Or if from a bot

So I’m leaving you, Twitverse
And your dark gloomy sham
I’m switching to lightness
And only Instagram.
