Typewriter Rodeo: Uncomfortable Conversations

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

At the same time we are being “socially distant” – we are grappling with deeply rooted issues that can be tough to talk about. That was the inspiration for this Typewriter Rodeo poem.

Uncomfortable Conversations

I can like and retweet

From my comfy couch

Think I’ve softly made

A difference

But until I go out

Talk to that family member or friend

(I know the one)

Until I stop letting those comments

Slide

Until then we all just stay

Stuck

Me in my easy chair

Others in places

Not so simple

Or safe.

And maybe that’s how

We want it.

Or maybe it’s time

For those of us who’ve been

Cozy

To get up

To get a bit

Uncomfortable

Like so many others

Have always been.
