Typewriter Rodeo: Unfortunate Discovery

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

For some people, it’s snakes. For others, it’s spiders. In Texas, we have both — in large sizes and quantities. Consider the tarantula. Yes, it’s harmless. But try telling that to some! That was the inspiration for this Typewriter Rodeo poem.

Unfortunate Discovery

I am writing this from the neighbors’ house
Where I live now
Because of the tarantula
I found
In the bathroom trash can

I found it
And I fled
Shrieking and flailing
(and, as it turns out, lacking key clothing items)

Forgive me, entomologists of Texas
Who’ll be quick to point out
That the tarantula is generally a peaceful creature
Who wants simply to coexist

This is all fine and well
Except when it wants to co-exist
In my bathroom

I’ll miss you
But it’s nice here at the neighbors’ house
Murray made enchiladas
And Bill poured me a nice glass of wine

(But do you think you could bring me down some pants?)
