Typewriter Rodeo: Weird things in the sky

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

For a few days it was all we could talk about: what is that thing? And then it was: what are those things? For the most part, we’ve moved on. But the answers remain a bit unsatisfactory for many. That was the inspiration for this Typewriter Rodeo poem.

Weird Things in the Sky

It’s a bird
it’s a plane
no…
it’s a much weirder third thing
a balloon
that spies
a long cylindrical flying thing
a round kind of saucer-like
flying thing
floating or flying
surveilling or simply just
darting around the sky
one was weird
now we’re well on our way to five
unidentified
flying
objects
in our skies
Maybe I’m not the only one
who bought a ten year old
a drone for christmas
& wondered how that may go awry…
