Typewriter Rodeo: Zika Virus

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on the news.

Texas is implementing a targeted strike against mosquito breeding grounds to keep the Zika Virus at bay. That was the inspiration for Typewriter Rodeo’s Kari Anne Roy as she wrote this week’s poem.

Zika Virus

so many things

are shared across cultures

food

fashion

politics

scandal

and always…

viruses

yes, the lovely calling cards

of a global society

flitting on the breeze

with every sneeze

coursing through our veins

only to be sweated out

excreted in some gross way

and passed on

a love letter?

from the airport

from that journey through the rainforest

so watch out

be careful

embrace the deet

and maybe erect a Lysol wall

around this global beast.
