U.S. Rep. Chip Roy, a Republican from the Austin area, said Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis should be the 2024 Republican nominee for president. He appears to be the first Texan in Congress to support DeSantis, the Texas Tribune reports.
DeSantis hasn’t yet announced his bid for president yet but is expected to later this year. James Barragán, political reporter for the Texas Tribune, said it’s noteworthy too because of who Roy didn’t endorse.
“It’s also a little strange because he’s not endorsing President Trump,” Barragán said. “They, of course, have had a rocky relationship in the past, with Trump not endorsing Chip Roy for reelection.”
Trump has received support from several Texans in Congress, including U.S. Rep. Wesley Hunt of Houston, Rep. Troy Nehls of Richmond and Rep. Ronny Jackson of Amarillo.
