Rep. Lamar Smith of San Antonio wrote the day after the election that he was the first member of Congress to donate to Donald Trump’s campaign.

Is that a fact? Gardner Selby of the PolitiFact Texas fact-checking team has the answer.

Smith, a Republican re-elected to the House seat he’s held since 1987, made an I-was-first claim the day after Trump’s win.

Predicting good things to come, Smith wrote: “When I learned I was the first member of Congress to contribute to Donald Trump, I didn’t know whether to smile or frown. Now, the walk-on quarterback has won the Super Bowl!”

Hear how Smith’s claim scored in the player above.
