Was Section 1325 Of The US Immigration Code Sponsored By A Segregationist Lawmaker?

Democratic presidential candidate and former San Antonio Mayor, Julián Castro, says a 1929 provision of U.S. immigration law was put into place by a segregationist. Is that a fact? Madlin Mekelburg of the PolitiFact Texas fact-checking team has the answer.

Castro has made an issue of Section 1325 of U.S. immigration law, especially since he had success discussing it at last month’s Democratic debate. Castro wants to repeal Section 1325, and make crossing the border somewhere other than a port of entry a civil, rather than criminal, offense.

Mekelburg says Castro made his claim about the law in an MSNBC interview after the debate – a debate during which he sparred with fellow candidate, and fellow Texan, Beto O’Rourke.

Hear how Castro’s claim scored in the player above.
