Kirkus Reviews puts together “Best of” lists each year for categories including fiction, non-fiction, children’s books and book apps.

A few of Smith’s favorites for 2014 include the fiction novel Euphoria by Kirkus Prize winner Lily King. It re-imagines the love triangle between anthropologist Margaret Mead and two men. Smith calls it a “slim, beautiful book.”

In non-fiction, Smith recommends the Oxford Atlas of the World. At $90, Smith admits this buy isn’t for everyone but, he says, the book’s attention to detail is impressive.

Finally, Smith likes the archive of music photography by Danny Clinch called Danny Clinch. It features a forward by Bruce Springsteen and includes photos of legendary musicians including Lucinda Williams, R.E.M. and Neil Young. Smith says many of the photos are intimate and accessible.
