Where Is Home Away From Home For Houston Expats?

In Harris County, more than one million residents – that’s one in four people — were born in a foreign country. Earlier this year, Houston Public Media began its first installment in a year-long series called “The Million” with their partners at the Houston Chronicle. It explores how diversity shapes the region.

The series started with a visit to Lee High School in Southwest Houston where every day in the cafeteria, the same group of ten girls from nine different countries crowd around one table. Monday, we visit the second installment in the partnership, in which reporters interviewed people in places they consider their home away from home. Houston Public Media combines that with their own Houston Matters producer and foreign-born, Edel Howlins’, sense of belonging in the city.
