Did you hear about the picture of a plain, ordinary egg that’s racked up 42 million likes, and counting? By the time we went to air, it was 47 million. Did you like it yourself? It all happened on Instagram, which some have dubbed the “younger, cooler” Facebook. And a lot of its fans feel like Instagram is a more benign presence online than Facebook. Is that true, and why is Instagram winning at social media right now?
Tech expert Omar Gallaga with Tech Minute Texas says the egg felt like a kinder, gentler social media phenomenon, and says many feel that’s true of Instagram, too, even when it’s not.
“The tone on Instagram is very different from, say Facebook or Twitter,” Gallaga says. “You don’t see people getting into political arguments on Instagram. You don’t see people trolling as much on Instagram.”
What you’ll hear in this segment:
– Why people feel good about using Instagram
– How Instagram stories changed a photo-sharing platform
– Why trusting Instagram with your time and photos isn’t any safer than Facebook
