The University of Houston Cougars are the only undefeated, top 25 ranked team in the state of Texas. Which is pretty incredible considering that Baylor and TCU seemed like the teams most of the national media was touting as the pride of the state.

The Houston Chronicle’s University of Houston athletics beat writer Joseph Duarte joins the Standard to talk about the Cougars’ exciting year.

“They go out and they hire the hot-name head coach, Tom Herman, who was coming off the national championship with Ohio State and it just seems everything he’s touching right now turns to gold,” he says. “This is a team that nobody thought would catch fire as quickly as they did.”

Although Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback Greg Ward Jr. led the team while ranked near the top of all the statistical categories this year, he suffered an ankle injury this weekend during a remarkable comeback win against top 25-ranked Memphis Tigers.

That’s where the Cinderella story comes in, says Duarte, as the Cougars called on the backup quarterback Kyle Postma, who led the team to victory after being down 20 points in the fourth quarter.

“Anyone who follows college football will know that Tom Herman last year had to got through three quarterbacks on the way to the national championship,” Duarte says. “So I asked him, what is it about him and backup quarterbacks that it seems like he puts one in and they don’t skip a beat.”
