Why Trump is Right About the Political System

Trump could be right, but Ted Cruz says he’s just whining.

Sen. Ted Cruz says his opponent for the GOP primary is just whining. Cruz is mobilizing his base to capture at least 50 delegates from Wyoming, Georgia, South Carolina and Florida, where Trump has already won primaries. But Trump is calling the political process rigged.

Matthew Dowd, chief strategist for the Bush-Cheney campaign in 2004 and current ABC Mews political analyst, recently visited George Stephanopoulos’s show, where he said Trump is right.

“We don’t often say that Trump is right,” Dowd tells the Standard. “I think Donald Trump is a flawed messenger, but he’s right about the process. … It doesn’t represent any one man, one woman, one vote system. It’s a system on both sides of the aisle that’s manipulative in a way so that it can be controlled by a certain group of people for an outcome.”

The system we have is broken, Dowd says.

“This is a system that was not, interestingly enough, envisioned by our founding fathers and founding mothers,” he says. “There was nothing mentioned about the two political parties in the Constitution or the Declaration of Independence.”

In fact, Dowd says the country’s founders warned against such a system.

“It is a system that is not equal and does not give power to the voters in a very justifiable fashion,” Dowd says. “It is a system that the two political parties have put in place over time to try to control the process.”
