Rumors have swirled for years about Apple’s supposed plans to build an electric car. The iPhone company’s vehicle development plan is believed to be codenamed “Project Titan,” and though no announcements have been made, much of the speculation has occurred because of the company’s hiring of ex-Tesla engineers.

Last year, rumors suggested that Titan had been suspended because of the difficulty inherent in entering the car business. But this year, another new set of  rumors circulated that Titan was back online, though there’s disagreement among investment analysts about how long it could take Apple to launch a vehicle..

Over the holidays, Tesla CEO Elon Musk added his own brand of fuel to the Apple car fire, saying he had offered to sell Tesla to Apple in 2017, but that Apple refused even to discuss it.

Tech expert Omar Gallaga told Texas Standard that Apple could be missing some important elements it would need to succeed in the car business, including the deep-learning and artificial intelligence know-how to build an autonomous vehicle.

What you’ll hear in this segment:

– Why Apple car rumors are so compelling
