Words Of Encouragement And A Hug, From AMLO To Mexicans Living Abroad

“Because they are the way they are – hard-working, good people, cultured people – they have achieved. And, now, they are a great support to our country.”

Texas and Mexico have been intertwined for generations. Even after Texas gained independence from Mexico in 1836, the two still shared a border, and have ever since. Today, more than $187 billion worth of goods flows across that border every year. And the two nations share culture, too.

Mexican consulates throughout Texas hosted Mexican Independence Day celebrations over the weekend, celebrating the country’s successful rebellion against Spain.

When Texas Standard’s Joy Diaz visited Mexico over the summer, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador asked if she could deliver a message from him to his compatriots living in Texas and elsewhere in the U.S.:

I’d like to take this opportunity to greet Mexicans living abroad – they are our living heroes. Many face discrimination and poor working conditions. But because they are the way they are – hard-working, good people, cultured people – they have achieved. And, now, they are a great support to our country. Our migrants are doing this.

Remittances are our country’s largest source of income.

I want to thank Mexicans living abroad for that.

We are committed to supporting you, letting you know you are not alone; we are here to help in any way we can, always.

Mexico is not only the people who live within the Mexican territory, but also the population who lives abroad and their children. That makes for about 34 million people in the United States. So I’m sending you all a greeting and a hug.
