Facing backlash, xAI dials back availability of sexualized images

Elon Musk’s AI tool, Grok, and his social platform, X, faced threats of bans and other government action over images that sexualized children.

xAI said Wednesday that the Grok AI tool will no longer display nude or sexualized images of real people, including children.

Since late December, Grok users on X have been able to ask the AI tool to generate revealing or sexualized images – often of women and children. Several countries, along with state lawmakers in California and Texas, raised alarms, and users pressured Apple and Google to remove Grok from their app stores.

Tech expert Omar Gallaga says it’s unclear whether xAI’s announcement will silence critics.

Highlights from this segment:

– xAI said Wednesday that Grok users on X would no longer be able to create images of real people in revealing clothing. The restriction applies to both paid and free users, the company says.

– Texas Democrats had urged Attorney General Ken Paxton, who has supported a number of restrictions on big tech platforms, based on their content, to investigate xAI. Meanwhile, California’s attorney general was planning an investigation.

– Several Asian and European countries had already banned X, or threatened investigations into Grok’s behavior on the platform.
