A report from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that the cost of owning a home rose in 2024, even amid efforts from lawmakers in Texas to cut property taxes.
Measures passed at the capitol have brought down that tax burden for homeowners, but other costs like utilities and insurance have contributed to a 2.7% cost increase the previous year.
“So overall, the finding: Costs about $1,400 per month for the median Texas homeowner in costs beyond their mortgage payments,” said Jasper Scherer, politics editor for the Texas Tribune.
