We’re all used to lawmakers, pundits, advocates and economists arguing over those two little words “border security,” but for all we’ve been hearing about the issue there are some things officials won’t tell you. The Texas Tribune laid out eight border and immigration subjects officials won’t release information about.

Jay Root is part of the Tribune’s Bordering on Insecurity project. They’ve been taking a yearlong look at the issues of border security and immigration. He says that in many cases they couldn’t get beyond officials’ rhetoric. The Tribune kept hitting walls and had to forge ahead with as much information as they could gather.

But when the facts are unattainable, Root says people tend to fill in the holes.

“It breeds a lot of mistrust, division and cynicism because you can’t really talk about the real facts, so people just insert their own facts,” Root says. “There’s just a ton of misinformation because of this.”

In this segment, you’ll hear some of the information the Texas Tribune tried to get, but ICE wouldn’t give to them.
