Cody Swann and Zahira Gutierrez began writing their latest album together when they broke up. The breakup happened at a friend’s wedding, when Swann asked if he looked OK.
“[He] asked me ‘do I look together?” Gutierrez says. “And I said ‘I don’t know, do we look together?’ Because I took it as, do we still look like a couple. Because we hadn’t told any of our friends we had broken up. And that’s when we started writing.”
Their band is Wild Moccasins, and the new album is called “Look Together.”
“Being at that wedding – at that kind of launching point – it confirmed that we were at peace with the decision,” Swann says.
Gutierrez says she wrote “Waterless Cup” when she realized she needed to clear her room of reminders of her romantic relationship with Swann.
“I just remember sitting in my room with a really old, almost toy kind of keyboard that I had bought from a thrift store, writing the chords and singing along the lyrics, because I couldn’t bring myself to continue taking down photographs and removing any…” Swann jumps in “relationship paraphernalia?”
