It’s time for the week that was in Texas politics with Texas Tribune reporter Emma Platoff.
Activists pushed for the Killeen military base, Fort Hood, to be renamed so as not to memorialize confederate leaders, while Republican officials like Sen. John Cornyn resisted such a change.
“You can’t learn from our history if you try to erase it because it’s hard to see where this leads,” Cornyn told reporters during a conference call this week.
In Washington, Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo testified before a U.S. House committee. He said the so-called defunding of police departments is not the answer to institutional racism in the law enforcement system.
“[Acevedo] said that cutting police funding and sort of some of the other calls activists are making is not the right way forward,” Platoff said.
President Donald Trump visited Dallas on Thursday, and also gained the support of Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush.
“[Bush] will endorse Trump and vote for Trump,” Platoff said. “That puts him at odds with some members of his family who are reportedly not planning to do so.”
Former presidents George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush did not vote for President Trump in the 2016 election.
