The conservative-majority U.S. Supreme Court voted to overturn Roe V. Wade, the 1973 decision that granted constitutional federal protections for the right to an abortion, in an opinion issued Friday.
The 6-3 decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization means that the power to decide the legality of abortion shifts from the federal level to the states. Texas’ so-called trigger law will soon take effect, ending abortion for nearly all residents.
