Vanna Wainwright works at the famous bakery of Czech Stop, in downtown West, Texas. Established in 1952, it’s the first Czech bakery in all of Texas.
“Wendel [Montgomery] is actually the first person – they call him the ‘Grandfather of Kolaches’ – he’s the first person who thought of the sausage kolache and talked his mother-in-law into making them,” she says.
The bakery has sold sausage kolaches ever since.
“We get busy,” she says. “We get some of our regulars that come and sit down and quite a few of the townfolk.”
Wainwright says it reminds her of Cheers – everyone knows your name when you come in.
