“Whenever you read a poem, you absorb a little piece of that person and what he’s experienced.”

Seventeen-year-old Dallas resident Gopal Raman is serving as a National Student Poet.

Gopal, along with four other student poets from around the U.S., serves as a literary ambassador on behalf of the President’s Committee and First Lady Michelle Obama. This year, Raman represents the Southwest.

“Whenever you read a poem,” he says, “you absorb a little piece of that person and what he’s experienced.”

After finding his love for poetry in middle school, Raman wants to share that passion by working with elementary and middle school students. He hopes to help students not only become better poets, but better thinkers as well.

“It really adds another dimension to my life,” he says, “and it has let me connect to so many interesting people.”
