Typewriter Rodeo: Aren’t We All Winners, Really?

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

A text of affirmation or encouragement is often appreciated. But perhaps you are among the many who receive such texts from total strangers — or more like bots — and often with a suspicious link to claim a prize. That was the inspiration for this Typewriter Rodeo poem.

Aren’t We All Winners, Really?
As you move through your days
searching for love,
for acceptance,
for the shimmering sparkle of acknowledgement,
I hope that you,
like me,
feel incredibly,
almost painfully seen
by those who adore you,
who call
and message
and always,
always,
text.
Like XYVZMOQPD.RU
and MRFGZQIPOM.YOU.COM.PRIZE
who never miss
one hour
of any day
professing their
undying desires
to tell me
and you
and that guy over there
we are winners.
well thank you, MRFGZQIPOM.YOUWIN.COM.PRIZE,
I_am_a winner
And I appreciate your constant,
unwavering attempts
to tell me this
over and over
and over
again
