Parents are usually happy about it; kids, probably less so: The new school year is starting. And with new classrooms, teachers and schedules often comes a new batch of school supplies. That’s the inspiration for this Typewriter Rodeo poem.
Back to School Supplies
This uncracked notebook
So far just paper
But soon to hold
All realms of knowledge
Logarithmic functions
Metamorphosis cycles
Iambs and metaphors
And the story of the
Land upon which
we learn
together
This unsharpened pencil
Just graphite rolled in wood
But soon to share stories
Unpuzzle mysteries
Solve problems
And pass notes to friends
And me –
This summer person
Not yet my next realm of
scholar
Who knows what new pathways
My brain will light up
What journeys will become
My story
What memories I’ll
build
All thanks to the new knowledge
awaiting
