Typewriter Rodeo: Culture Wars

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

By Sean PetrieApril 8, 2022 9:44 am,

This Typewriter Rodeo poem came to us via listener request. Matthew Koontz suggested the topic “no governing, just culture wars.” This is the result.

“No Governing, Just Culture Wars”

It used to be, I think,
About common goals
But no political discourse
Is more about stoking coals

About making sure voters
Are fervid and hating
Reaching agreement
Doesn’t make for good ratings

The more divisive the better!
If there’s consensus, cleave it!
(Doesn’t matter if you
Really believe it)

What matters is votes!
What matters is power!
So make every constituent
More upset by the hour!

How will it change?
How can we be less bitter?
Can we break free from Fox News
CNN and Twitter?

The politicians won’t change
They’ll keep pushing us around
They’ll keep the culture wars up
Until WE calm down.
