Typewriter Rodeo: First Day of School

Each week, the Texas Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on a relevant headline or topic.

Schools across Texas will be teeming with students and teachers soon. That was the inspiration for this week’s Typewriter Rodeo poem by Jodi Edgerton.

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

Pencils sharpened

Backpack packed

All their clothes laid out

The first day back to school is here

And parents give a shout

Grateful to the teachers

Who’ll inspire every child

With stories, math, experiments

Researching animals wild

Drop them off at school finally

With a tiny tear and a hug

Then gather up with the other parents

Party on — let’s cut a rug!
