Typewriter Rodeo: Holiday Half-Craft

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

Some people do their holiday shopping all year long, others wait until the last minute. With online shopping and fast delivery, it’s easier than ever to take care of everyone on your list without leaving your couch. But a brave few are determined to make gifts, with their DIY skills and eye for detail.

(But online shopping is a nice backup for those of us who can’t draw a straight line.)

Holiday Half-Craft

This year, yes
THIS is the YEAR!
Adios, Amazon
Buh-bye, Bath & Body Works
This time, I’m giving everyone gifts made
BY hand
And with LOVE!
First stop, Michael’s
For all the paints
Pre-crafted balsa birdhouses
And glitter pens I can find!
I’m gonna decorate these
With sparkly rainbow abandon!
A cool blue for Donna (she likes the ocean)
And a shiny green for Henry
(He’s an Eagles fan)
(But we still like him)
Then off to JoAnn’s Fabric fantasticness:
For all the felt and sequins I can get
Oh, these personalized stockings
Are gonna rock everyone’s
Mantle world!

Okay.
It’s been two weeks now
And my counter is a wasteland
Of half-painted birdhouses
(Eagles are tougher than they look)
And opened-toed stockings
(Sorry, kids)
As well, maybe next year.
Time to get everyone what they really want
Anyway–
Hello Amazon giftcard.
I wonder if they have one
With the Eagles logo…
