Typewriter Rodeo: Interpret

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

Interpret (an ode to the ASL interpreters)

There is a light that appears
behind eyes
when they understand,
a light that sparked between
my fingers and
crackled across this space,
bridging the gap between
silence and speech,
between included and –invited–,
a welcoming to the party,
a rhythm, a pattern,
a syncopation that whispers
“here is the joke,”
“here is the secret,”
“you’re in on it, too,”
“we want you here with us.”

my hands tell that story,
my whole body talks,
it is a dance, a poem,
it is for you,
for us.
