A leaked draft U.S. Supreme Court opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade has dominated this week’s headlines. It was the inspiration behind this week’s Typewriter Rodeo poem.

SCOTUS

Trust me, you said, earnest, stoic
Trust me; take my word
I wasn’t sure; I wasn’t ready
but you pressed and promised
you gave gave gave your word
take it, you said, take me
at it, you assured
over and over oath after oath
your word your word to earn my trust
over and over oath after oath
until it pressed into
it pieced it entered
my mind my wild hopes
it pushed past doubts cast
this ironclad word of yours
a promise to overpower
my suspicions
an assurance a bond a blief
that words, even yours,
hold meaning so I took it
I took your word
And you took my trust
And now your meaning is clear
And oath by oath I am assured
my trust is gone
but hopefully
not for good
