Students across Texas are prepping for the statewide standardized test known as the STAAR. That was the inspiration for this poem.
STAAR Testing (requested by many)
bubbles and bubbles
and bubbles some more
number two pencil
with which them to score
a, b, or c, or all the above
it’s about money, when push comes to shove
’cause we need one more reason
to deny those in need
the funding to buy
even textbooks to read
if the kids don’t score high,
then the school is denied
certification or all sense of pride
no matter the factors, social, economic
these tests will exacerbate
in a manner not comic
but deadly serious
to generations still doomed
to be counted forever
the last in the room
