Typewriter Rodeo: Summer Living

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

The heat is still on for much of Texas. For those of us with indoor jobs or school, it can be surprising how warm it remains even late in the day. That was the inspiration for this Typewriter Rodeo poem.

Summer Living

huddled in my icy, dim cave

the glowing screen

my only light

as

(presumably)

the day goes by, outside

i wouldn’t know

as i avoided the gaze

of that evil yellow eye

in the sky

(how it burns!)

finally, though

my eyes are spinning a bit

in their sockets

my back is hunched

and my legs needs stretching

so i stumble forth

to the front door

by my calculations it should be,

sometime

in the late afternoon

surely, i think

the atmospherics have calmed down

by now

aren’t they tired like me?

so i open the door

and am met

with an implacable wall

of heated air

so back inside i go…
