Typewriter Rodeo: Tejas

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

In election years, the subject of borders inevitably comes up, whether it’s a local race or a national one. That inspired Typewriter Rodeo’s David Fruchter to write this week’s poem.

Tejas

borders

are manmade fictions

dreams of states and nations,
themselves figments of history

ever porous, always lagging behind
the realities of populations

any attempt to make them concrete
physical
permanent

is a fool’s errand

time itself chuckles
under its breath
as arbitrary walls between people
crumble into dust

close yourself up tight
and the world will pass you by
open your arms in welcome
and what you gain
is everything
