Typewriter Rodeo: The Leaf Blowers

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

These gas-powered rearrangers of fallen plant matter evoke strong emotions in those who wield them.

The Leaf Blowers

My neighbor blew his leaves at me

And I, mine back at him

His pecans mixed up with my oaks

and both our elms mixed in

We hit our blowers at the same time

Pointed each at each

Full power blasting,

The leaves rose up

Caught near, yet out of reach

They were no longer on my lawn

And his were not on his

Our HOA was happy It was lawn-decluttered bliss

But here we stay

Day after day

Our leafy impasse grows

For neither neighbor will relent

And so,our leaves just… blow
