Typewriter Rodeo: The New Normal

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

As COVID-19 has spread around the world, it has led to changes in our way of life that many have begun calling the “new normal”. That was the inspiration for this Typewriter Rodeo poem.

The New Normal

It’s panic buying on Amazon

It’s cheering that coveted curbside delivery time

It’s homemade facemasks

It’s more neighborhood walks

More slowing down

More reaching out to family

And friends

Than ever before

It’s virtual game nights & happy hours

It’s jigsaw puzzles and board games

It’s hoping everyone you know

And they know

Is safe and healthy

It’s being creative

It’s worrying about money and meals

Like you’d only heard of

From grandparents

It’s making lists

Of how long this food will last

Just in case

It’s wondering what will substitute

For toilet paper

It’s learning or re-learning

To freeze and can food

Garden and plant

It is fear, yes,

But it is also hope

And perhaps a much-needed

Reset —

Because here we are

Still laughing, loving, living

Perhaps at a distance

But sometimes it takes a little distance

To see

What matters.
