Dozens of people protesting the deaths of George Floyd and Michael Ramos in 2020 were injured by so-called “less lethal” munitions used by Austin Police officers trying to disperse protestors. Eighteen APD officers now could face charges in their involvement in causing those injuries.
The Austin American Statesman reports cases against these officers are before a grand jury, which will determine whether or not the officers will be charged for injuries caused by rubber bullets and bean bag rounds during the 2020 protests in downtown Austin. While cases being heard by grand juries are secret, Tony Plohetski with the Austin-American Statesman and KVUE news says legal experts believe some of these officers are likely facing assault charges.
