Texans have an unspoken agreement when it comes to passing each other on the open road. That was the inspiration for Typewriter Rodeo’s Sean Petrie as he wrote this week’s poem.

Oh there’s nothing like it
Out there, on that wide open road
Maybe in the flat fields by the coast
Maybe the rugged landscape of west TX
Or just the endless vistas
Of the panhandle
Yup, just you and your vehicle
Cruising that two-lane
No one no one no one no
Oh hey there
Little dot in my rearview
Approaching faster
Getting bugger, bigger, hello
And if you’re not too close
I’ll do it
Scoot off to the shoulder
Endure those bumps
So that you can be more quickly
On your way
And we’ll acknowledge each other
With the courtesy wave
Pinkie to pinkie
But if you zoom up too fast
Dominate my rearview with your face
Then I’ll stay put
And we’ll both likely acknowledge each other
With a different,
Longer finger.
